Mouseling's 100 Questions for Webmasters

List of questions can be found here. Updated December 17th, 2025.

1. Please introduce yourself.

You can call me "R". I started this website in 2022. I use he/him or they/them pronouns. I'm unsure what else to say that is relevant to a brief introduction, luckily I have an about page in the navigation bar.

2. How long have you been making websites?

This is my first website! :)

3. And what got you into the hobby?

Short answer is that I've always wanted to make a personal website, but thought I missed my chance when all of the old (free) web hosts went offline (ie GeoCities). I was in the single digits when GeoCities and Angel Fire were popular, but I did get to grow up during the golden age of profile customization and went fucking crazy for it. I would spent hours upon hours perfecting my Neopets and GaiaOnline profile pages and working on the bb code for my forum posts. I got a NeoCities account the second I learned about it.

4. What kind of website are you most interested in?

I like personal websites. I get concerned when people overshare—we are still on the modern web and people are liable to misuse that information—but I do generally enjoy reading about random strangers. I have no real preference for what types of strangers, there is something to be gained both by reading the sites of people vastly different than me and the sites of people very similar to me. I do want to find more websites run by pagans who actually choose to talk about paganism though. Also more people who are older than me.

5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?

I'm just making shit up as I go along. My Dungeons & Dragons website was a little more organized, since I knew what I wanted to share though. I do also have some loose plans for an informational paganism/witchcraft website I'd like to make. I dunno, I like to be spontaneous, but I also prioritize the information I'm sharing over the coding.

6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.

I don't think I have any inspirations that I could consider Big ones. I just like to browse websites and, if I see something I like, I make a mental note of it in case it's something I could implement. My coding skills haven't improved all that much over the past 3 years, but they haven't really had to. I just want to talk about things I like and I don't really need to know anything complicated for that.

7. What's your favourite part about making websites?

You're not going to believe this, but it's talking about things I enjoy. Pure and simple.

8. And the thing you struggle with the most?

Getting out of my comfort zone. I would like to learn more complex coding, but I really haven't gone out of my way to do that.

9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?

I use the same layout on a lot of my pages, but I'll use different layouts if it suits my needs better.

10. How confident are you with CSS?

Not at all.

11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?

Had to google it, not gonna lie. It sounds very useful, so I should probably learn.

12. What is your favourite HTML element?

I've literally never thought about that once in my entire life.

13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?

I mean. Basic structure stuff like the body/main section. I don't make very many pages from scratch, since I use the same layout for 99% of my pages. I'll get back to you on this one.

14. Do you know JavaScript?

I'll put it this way. I understand what it is and how its meant to be utilized (at least for specific purposes), but I do not know how to make it do that. Ignore that this page utilizes javascript.

15. How about PHP?

Beats me.

16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?

I try to keep to a kinda goth thing, but I'm not actually trying to be that strict about it.

17. Are you more focused on content or design?

Content, 100%. I only learn how to do new things with html if I think it'll benefit the content I'm sharing.

18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?

No, and I'm kind of ambivalent. I guess it would be nice to own Plaguecore.net as a domain though. Maybe one day.

19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?

I love them, but I do think they tend to romanticize the old web too much. I saw so much shit in the late 2000s that you can't even find on the internet very easily anymore. I did go on a bit of a rant, but deleted it because it's not actually relevant to the question. I think it's fine to enjoy the aesthetics and wish some things about the old web were still the norm (I certainly fall into both of those categories), but you need to remember that the internet was not necessarily a better or safer place in the 1990s-early 2010s. It was just not as mainstream, which came with its own issues.

20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?

Maybe surprising, given my other responses, but yeah. I do actually check, I promise. I do miss things sometimes though.

21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?

Love them. Keep it up.

22. What do you think of button walls in particular?

Love them.

23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?

I think I would try to plan some things out a little more, honestly.

24. Are you envious of other people's websites?

I'm more envious of their knowledge than their actual websites. They aren't doing what I want to do, so there isn't much to be actively envious of.

25. What text editor do you use?

I don't think you want to hear the answer to that, it'll cause you immense pain.

26. Why do you use that one?

I hate to make things easier for myself.

27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?

I host most of them on my web server, but I also use catbox.moe for some things.

28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?

I'm unaware of the debate since I don't really engage in the community aspect of webmaster-ing or whatever, but I do also have a site hosted on nekoweb (unsure what to do with it though). Both have their merits, but I do overall prefer Neocities.

29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?

My site is using ~3% of the space given to free accounts, so definitely not very much at all.

30. Do you keep local backups of your files?

Yes, I routinely back up my website.

31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?

I think I prefer simple ones, generally. I can get overstimulated looking at websites that are too busy. I honestly don't care, as long as the site is easy to navigate and the information is easy to read.

32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?

I do and it's a bit of both. I just want things to look cohesive, but I'm not going to be super serious about color matching or color theory or whatever.

33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?

No, it's not a job is it? I can just take breaks and come back whenever I feel like it.

34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?

My partner! I don't have anybody I'd consider I friend, but I think some of my mutuals are in the acquaintence category for sure.

35. Do people in your real life know about your website?

I definitely mention having a personal website, but I think the only person who has seen it is my partner's best friend (whom I'm also friends with, love her, we just met through my partner).

36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?

I update it when I feel like it, and when I have the time to. Sometimes I'm updating it every day for a few weeks, sometimes I leave it along for a few months (usually because I'm busy).

37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?

I have only changed the overall design once. I'm just more concerned with the content, so I don't care about the design very much. I only changed it because I wanted to better utilize CSS and start using javascript to make edits easier so the website could be a little more uniform.

38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: It's focused on whatever I'm focused on at any given moment. Which is usually hobbies or religion. I want to do more politics related stuff, but I feel like I have a hard time expressing my thoughts in a way that sounds coherent when it comes to politics. Which is kinda stupid, because I consistently had very high grades in college level political science classes (and I'm majoring in history! You'd think I would have it figured out by now).

39. Do you do web design professionally?

hahahahahahaha

40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?

No way, I enjoy it too much as a hobby. I am unemployed and focusing on finishing up my degree.

41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?

Y'know. I have an email listed on this website and I literally never check it. I'm sorry if you've emailed me, I'm gonna try to work that into my schedule. I email people probably about as much as you'd expect somebody in their late 20s to.

42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?

I do, I use Tumblr and Bluesky. Bluesky doesn't scratch my social media itch and Tumblr makes me feel like I'm talking on eggshells. I had a Cohost when that was a thing, but I rarely used it because I just didn't like the people on it very much. I also have a SpaceHey, but I'm having trouble getting used to it. I haven't been on it since I quit my job, actually...I do want to find social media that I enjoy using though.

43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?

I use Discord and have been on it pretty regularly since 2016. I'd be open to using another one, if only so I can mention it on here so people can message me more directly, since I'm clearly terrible at answering emails.

44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?

Depends? When I do, it's the same things I usually listen to anyway. Recently, I've been listening to Ninajirachi's I Love My Computer album and Eurodance. Which is a little out of the ordinary for me.

45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?

Currently, only one website, but I do want to make a separate website for paganism information simply for the sake of organization. I would keep anything related to my personal practice on here though. The other website would be purely informational.

46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?

Many. AuDHD has me jumping around to every topic under the sun and getting really fixated.

47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?

I'm trying to present my real self, but I do struggle to open up as much as I'd like to.

48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?

No, but I like the people I've interacted with.

49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?

Sure.

50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't care what people do.

51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?

I don't really have an opinion on this.

52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?

It's probably pretty generic.

53. Do you consider different browsers?

My previous answer was "No. Use Firefox or die." (verbatim), but considering what Firefox is up to...my answer is just "no" now lol

54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.

Firefox...until I learned yesterday (so, 12/16/25) that there are plans for Firefox to become an AI based browser and I don't fuck with that. I'm trying out Zen browser currently.

55. And what OS are you on?

Windows 11

56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?

I don't have a strong opinion on it.

57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?

I believe so, I haven't had any issues.

58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?

I think you should go to jail.

59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?

I like them and want to join more. I was in the transing the web one, but then Neocities nuked my website for whatever fucking reason. So.

60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?

I don't and I don't really have strong feelings on them. If you're having fun, that's really all that matters.

61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?

Probably not, I dunno.

62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?

I don't have one. I'm just doing whatever.

63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?

I'm an art school dropout, actually. I draw, but I don't have an artstyle that lends itself to web design very well.

64. What are your favourite resource sites?

I'll get back to you on this one.

65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?

I really need to stop editing my website in the Neocities editor. (I actually openend up codepen immediately after typing this, simply because I got burned out on answering questions)

66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?

Don't edit directly in the editor given by the web host. Use codepen or something.

67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?

Brother, my code is a mess. Most of it is in CSS though, to actually answer the question.

68. What do you think of frameset layouts?

I dunno, I'm fine with them I think. I feel like I need to learn a bit more about coding so I can have a more informed opinion.

69. How about table-based layouts?

I'm not gonna lie, I'm not super familiar with table-based layouts.

70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?

I think two or three is ideal. Purely personal preference, there isn't any deep reason for this.

71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?

HTML, that's where all of the content is.

72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.

My about page doesn't have CSS. I chose to do that so that the blinkies and stamps could be more related to Me rather than the site theme, but I often forget to update the sidebars.

73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?

My website is Frankenstein's monster. No, I have never created a layout for no reason.

74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?

Beginner...ish?

75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?

Nah, I'm picky.

76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?

I don't think I ever did learn how to make websites.

77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?

Probably.

78. Thoughts on floating elements?

They're fine? I've never given them much thought.

79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?

It depends. If I know the dimensions I want, I'll use px (ie resizing blinkies), but if I don't, I use %.

80. Do you have a favourite font?

Times New Roman

81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?

Yeah, my partner and I did actually collaborate on a website before. It's no longer online though, we just weren't sure how to accomplish the things we wanted to do. As for how it worked, I just gave them the login information.

82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?

Not very often, only if I'm curious about something in particular.

83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?

I do sometimes bookmark other people's websites. I'd be incredibly flattered if somebody bookmarked mine.

84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?

I just hope they find something they think is interesting.

85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?

Oh yeah. I collect cameras and old game systems (though my collection is relatively small, due to space). Anything older than 20 years is of interest to me. The older, the better. I would definitely love to get my hands on an iMac G3 though, I just adore transparent tech. It is so sexy fuccckckckdfffffdsf. Infosec is also of interest to me, I'd generally like to improve my skills in these areas at some point.

86. How often and for how long are you online?

I am usually online at least once a day, often more. I rarely spend all day online, but I easily could if I got hyperfocused on something. Though, I try to be careful because I need to stretch often or my back will hurt (had a spinal cord injury when I was 20 and have permanent nerve damage) (even if you don't have all of that, you should be mindful and stretch. You only get one spinal cord!).

87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?

I'm my own target audience. Aside from that though, gay transgender communist pagans.

88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?

No.

89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?

Nah, I think I'm fine with what I'm doing.

90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?

Love those.

91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?

No, I just don't see any practical reason for it.

92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?

I'd love to frequent forums, but there haven't been any that caught my attention. I do have an eCauldron account though, I'd like to maybe go on there more often? I would like to learn about what forums are out there though.

93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?

It depends. Some stuff (ie the paganism pages) are written in a text document first so I can make sure everything is organized and that I have citations if necessary. The music pages, as an example, are written directly in the editor.

94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?

People have said I seem interesting and that can be interpreted in many different ways lol

95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?

Embarrassed isn't the right word, but I will delete old work if I think it's impossible to salvage. I will also delete things if I think I was having a mental health Moment when I put it out there, just because that doesn't need to be public.

96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?

Not everything needs to be constantly updated. Maybe I'll come back, maybe it's just done. Maybe it's just a snapshot of who I was during a particular period of my life. I'd just leave it.

97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?

I'm not secretive, but I am quite selective. "R" isn't even the first letter of my name. It's the first letter of an alias I use in games sometimes. But I am being up front about everything else. As long as it can't directly identify me, I'll share it. I am shy though, so. We'll see how comfortable I can get with even doing that.

98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?

My best online friend is a Vtuber. We did not meet because of them being a Vtuber though, this is just their current project. We met through something much more cringe.

99. And do you optimise the images on your website?

I haven't had to yet. There aren't that many pictures.

100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.

I feel like I answered 100 questions about myself.
