Day Two: Cosmology
This prompt is probably why I only got to day three the previous time I tried to do this challenge. It's just very complex and is a topic that I'm much more interested in reading about than writing about. Also, I worship deities from multiple pantheons so, there is a lot of different things I could choose to focus on.
I think the axis mundi is probably the most important part of the cosmology I personally care about. The axis mundi is often depicted as a tree (ie Yggdrasil) that unites the three realms of heaven, earth and the underworld. Of course, there are variations on this across different cultures.
As for how the universe came into being, there's many myths I could point to. The most prevalent theme in the myths that are relevant to my practice are creation from chaos/nothingness and the earth being created from the body of another being. Here are some creation myths, if you're interested in that sort of thing:
- Theogony (Ancient Greek creation myth)
- Völuspá (from the Poetic Edda)
- Gylfaginning (from the Prose Edda)
- Enuma Elish (Babylonian creation myth)
For the end of the world, the only myths I can think of off the top of my head that are relevant are Voluspa and Gylfaginning, which also contain the creation myths.
This topic is too complex for me to do in just one sitting, unfortunately.
