Day Three
Prompt: What are your views on cursing, hexing, and binding spells? Has your view changed throughout your journey? Why or why not?
I think cursing, hexing and binding spells are fine. I, personally, would try to only limit them to situations where they seem absolutely necessary (ie using a binding spell on somebody who is actively harassing you) however. My reasoning is that 1. it could be a bit of overkill, depending on what the person actually did and 2. if you aren't genuinely angry with them, you might not be putting enough energy into the spell and it'll flop.
I would say that, early on, I just read in a lot of books and online that cursing was bad because the energy would come back to you threefold and believed it without any critical thought. Aside from the fact that the specific "energy you put out comes back to you threefold" is a Wiccan thing, it also just doesn't make sense to me. If somebody is abusive, wouldn't somebody cursing them just be a result of the abuser's actions? If you're casting a spell about somebody, say, gossiping about you, wouldn't it just not work if the person wasn't actually gossiping?
I don't think there is any meaningful distinction between hexes and curses, as a side note. They're essentially synonyms in my opinion. I guess it's useful shorthand for "negative spells that cause inconvenience" and "negative spells that cause significant problems", but even that would come down to how the subject of the curse would feel about the effects. People have different thresholds for what they consider inconvenient and which things feel like huge problems to me. My one cousin almost had a nervous breakdown over a hole in an article of clothing that would be easy to just sew shut and exploded on me when I offered to fix it for her, but I doubt most spells that were like "this person will keep having small inconveniences like clothing getting holes in them or missing the bus" would consider their affects to be particularly severe.
